JR East
East Japan Railway Company
East Japan Railway Company (JR East) is one of Japan’s largest passenger railway operators, providing extensive urban, suburban, regional, and high-speed rail services across eastern Japan, including the Tokyo metropolitan area. In addition to operating railway services, JR East manages stations, transportation infrastructure, retail and commercial facilities, and other businesses closely integrated with its rail network.
The MIT Transit Lab has collaborated with East Japan Railway Company (JR East) on research related to railway operations, passenger behavior, and the use of data and emerging technologies to improve rail service. The partnership reflects a shared interest in understanding how advanced analytical methods can support more efficient, reliable, and passenger-centered railway systems.
