WMATA
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is the regional public transportation agency serving Washington, D.C. and surrounding communities in Maryland and Virginia. Created in 1967 through an interstate compact, WMATA operates Metrorail, Metrobus, and MetroAccess paratransit services across a service area of approximately 1,500 square miles and four million residents. Its transit network plays a central role in connecting residents, commuters, and visitors throughout the National Capital Region.
The MIT Transit Lab has partnered with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) on research addressing emerging challenges facing public transit in the Washington, D.C. region. Recent projects have examined post-pandemic transit-oriented development and ridership, customer feedback using large language models, K–12 student travel, passenger wayfinding within stations, and travel behavior during service disruptions. Together, this work uses emerging data sources and analytical methods to better understand passenger behavior, improve service planning and operations, and help WMATA respond to changing travel patterns and community needs.
